Biking Anyone?

Well, IĀ  surrendered walking as an exercise. I have funny z-coil shoes with springs instead of heels which, according to my doctor, absorb 50% of shock that my feet get when I walk. I am still in pain though…

THEM SHOES ARE UGLY.

I’d like to get in touch with people who bike because I really need support. BikingĀ  is a new activity for me. I use a recumbent bike in the basement. The plan is to get brave enough and learn how to turn on a real bike. Because I can ride a bike if it’s going straight but I fall immediately if I have to turn.

I biked 14 miles on the recumbent bike yesterday. It took me 43 minutes. I don’t know if it’s enough for a recumbent bike? I don’t know anything about biking. How many miles are good, what is mediocre, what is stellar? In addition, I don’t really like biking but I have to learn to love it because this is the only cardio exercise that I can do.

Anyway, for now I would like to start a thread on biking on the weight loss forum. My personal goal is to bike at least 14 miles a day, starting today. Please join me or just stop by on the biking thread. Share your experience, support, advice, or funny biking jokes.

I got some ugly shoes too…and I love them…just cause they ARE ugly:)
I don’t bike…I think I am too big for it…it isn’t very comfortable for me…but I know you will conquer it like you do everything else. You got a winner’s attitude!

I’m glad you found something you can do. I am new to biking myself and I know what you mean about the falling off…I’m still nervous when I ride—I wish I had HALF the confidence I had as a child…nowadays, I try to stay away from sand, and from heavily traffic areas. I highly recommend you get out of the house to bike…it makes it better and you don’t really feel like you’re actually exercising. I do understand that because of the heavy rain, that may be a problem. I am not a stationary bike kind of girl either, but I agree with you…we have to LEARN to love the activities which are withing our abilities!! Please keep me posted on your progress and I hope you feel better soon.

I think 14 miles/45 minutes on a stationary is great. I have a recumbent bike too and I really hate to ride it even though I love to cycle. I am trying, trying, trying to like it but it somehow seems wrong to be peddling and not to be going anywhere. I am absolutely commited to being back on a regular bike in the next 4-8 weeks. Before I hurt my neck I would usually to 10 miles on weekdays and then try and get in a 20-25 mile on the weekend. Out where I live there is a lot of hills so I would do my hill work first and the downhill/flat for the way back. Fortunately, or unfortunately, there is no rain here so that is never a problem, but that would be kind a scary since cars would have more trouble seeing you.

I’ve been riding my whole life and I still manage to have at least one major wreck a year. My knees look like hamburger. I have clip in pedals and my biggest liability is forgeting to twist out of them when I stop suddenly. Inevitably, I always manage to do this where lots of people are watching, usually at a traffic light!

I know this is an older blog, but I would love to learn more about shoes which absorb so much of the impact of walking because I have “bone of bone” in my right knee. This could be helpful. So if you have some time please let me know how to research them or what they are called etc.

    Thanking you in advance!
